What is a Fishfinder and How Does it Work?

A fishfinder is a device used by boatmen to locate fish in the water. Fishfinders work on the technology of the SONAR (Sound Navigation and Ranging) system. A fishfinder is a very important device in today’s fishing process and also for those looking forward to fishing as a leisure activity.

A fishfinder displays the location of a fish in a digital screen that can be either of a LCD or a CRT type. The technology of the fishfinder was first used in the 90s and has been constantly up-graded since. In today’s times, the fishfinders’ technology is developed to include even systems like the GPS, electronic compasses and radar, making the device even more reliable than even before.

Working & Display of Fishfinder

There is a transmitter located on the ship, which sends signals in the waves. The SONAR system uses the aspect of echoes to reflect back the waves to the transmitter. The reflected waves are recorded and a signal is sent to the screen.

In order to make sure the signals received are not false signals, the waves coming after getting reflected from fishes are displayed differently as compared to those coming from stones, corals or other obstructions. Thus, echoes differ in size and form when there are fishes in the water unlike when the water is clear of fishes. Things other than fishes are displayed with different symbols.

The display screen shows the presence of a fish in the water with the help of a symbol in the form of a fish. This display sometimes changes to become arches on the screen when the boat is cruising over that part of the water where the fishes are located. However, the display of the fish is unique so that the person monitoring the digital screen will not have any confusion regarding the presence of fishes and other underwater plants and stray weed.

Fishfinders Available in the Market

There are different types or brands of fishfinders that are available. The most popular ones are humminbird fishfinder, lowrance fishfinder, the eagle fishfinder, garmin fishfinder, and furuno fishfinder.  Each of these types is unique as they offer different depth to which the technology can penetrate into the water and display the presence of fishes in the water. The lowrance fishfinder models are very important because these models help to locate fishes especially in cold and icy areas. The price of a fishfinder starts at a modest price of US $ 100. The prices vary according to the different models of fishfinders.

An iPod Amplifier That Makes You Do the Work

This is Bongue, a music amplifier designed by Studio Toer. It certainly doesn’t look like any amp I’ve ever seen. And this video of it in all its kinetic glory isn’t doing much to clear things up.

So far all I’ve gathered is that 1) My iPod is going to be dangling from this thing like a helpless mountain climber and 2) I’m going to need to camp out by my wall and swing these pendulums around to play my tunes. Huh! Here’s how Toer describes the piece:

Bongue is a physic amplifier of mobile audio. The dinamic qualities give it a multisensorial experience for daily life.

When Bongue is fixed it’s only amplifying the sounds from the musicdevice itself. When you start moving the arm it will give energy to the amplifier and by that it will increase the volume of the musicplayer.

Still don’t really get it! But curiously still kinda want one on my wall. [StudioToer via MocoLoco]

Nike+ GPS app now includes ‘Play Tag’ feature

iPhone fitness app Nike+ GPS has been updated to allow friends to play ‘tag’, on their daily runs.

The hugely successful app, which lets runners track distance, time, speed and calories while recording the route on a GPS sensor, now includes the perfect motivational tool of pitting friends against each other, even on solo runs.

Once you’ve completed your daily jog, the app will ask you if you’d like to ‘Play Tag’, which involves setting a challenge based on your own run. Your rules can rest on the distance you ran, the time you spent running or the time of day you went for your run. The friend that comes last in the challenge will be ‘it’. The game continues until each of the invited runners has completed their run.

We can imagine it’d be great motivation to go that extra mile (literally and figuratively speaking), stay out that extra five minutes or get your behind out of bed a few minutes earlier in order to one-up your running buddies. If you remember from school being ‘it’ is a nightmare, chasing around the playground while everyone runs away from you. Who on earth wants to reopen those wounds?

Nike+ GPS with Virtual Tag is available to download from the App Store now for £1.19. Check out the video below to see it in action.

Why Buy a Cordless Phone?

With the world rapidly filling up with all types of communication devices from internet telephones and smartphones to traditional landline users, one more device seeks to adapt to the demands of a progressing technological world: the cordless phones. Portability and convenience meet clear calls and functionality in these useful electronic devices, bringing the entire telecommunications package to your home. These familiar devices consist of a base station that receives and routes the calls, several handset telephones and chargers for each of the individual handsets. Even though they are limited by a set range from the base station, don’t pass these useful machines up too quickly; they are far from obsolete.

Cordless Phones: What to Look for

In our reviews we looked at several cordless phones on the market today, gathering what we could about the best products and how they’ve adapted to a world run on cell phones. We examined each phone’s performance based on the amount of useful features it contained, both in the phone and the base station. We looked at how easy these home phones were to use and set up, as well as how well supported they were by their manufacturers. Our rating criteria will help you make an informed decision. To compare best cordless telephones, read our reviews on the top rated Panasonic KX-TG6545B, the Siemens Gigaset Sl785 and the GE Cell Fusion.

Phone Features
In this section, we looked at several features that were specific to the cordless phone portion of the set. This includes things such as the average talk time per full battery charge, the maximum number of handsets the base will accept and whether they have communication features like speakerphone, caller ID, call conferencing and a silent setting.

Device Features
This area deals with features that are either specific to the base set or are included in both the handset and base. Included are features such as an answering machine, an intercom function that will allow you to page individual handsets, a headset jack for hands-free communication, an alarm function, a base speakerphone and Bluetooth compatibility for headset and cell phone integration.

Ease of Use
This criterion, predictably, deals with the usability of the cordless phones. We considered both the ease of setup and the continued ease of use, stretching from the device itself to the clarity and understandability of the user manual.

Help & Support
Customer support is crucial if you are having difficulties with any electronic device. Cordless phone manufacturers are quite responsible when it comes to customer care, providing everything from an email address and a user manual to a FAQs section and even telephone support. Warranties are also included with the purchase of these devices, though their durations vary.

With the criteria we established here, we researched and discovered several top-of-the-line products on the market. Each of these was weighed and contrasted for their strengths and weaknesses and placed side by side in our lineup. Use the information we have assembled here to help you find the best cordless phone for your needs.
